Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable. (Leviticus 18:22, NIV)
God regarded it as not good that Adam was alone, so the Lord made a woman and brought her to him. Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” It was a beautiful scene where God introduced a woman directly to a man. The reason Adam said “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” was that the Lord took one of Adam’s ribs while he was sleeping deeply.
God applied this truth to all men and women by saying in Genesis 2:24, “A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” This is the form of the holy family that God has allowed, the order of creation, and the providence.
In the days of Abraham, however, Sodom and Gomorrah were sexually degraded, and homosexuality was rampant. It was a chaotic place where the people behaved lustfully against the reason God created men and women. They lived up to only their desire.
God considered this sin significantly serious and made a plan to destroy both towns.
Genesis 19:4 shows how much the people of Sodom had been corrupted. Two angels visited the house of Lot in Salem to save him. Then, all the men from every part of Sodom, regardless of age, surrounded Lot’s house to have sex with the two angels.
This scene explains why God had to turn down the prayer of Abraham when he prayed earnestly to save Sodom for the righteous people. No one was living according to God’s will.
Finally, God rained down burning sulfur on the land of Sodom and Gomorrah and overthrew all the cities and the entire plain, including all the creatures in the cities, except the family of Lot. The fallen culture was the reason for the collapse of the whole economy as well as the entire land.
The Bible regards homosexuality as the same sin as idolatry. Romans 1:25 defines homosexuality as “Exchanging the truth of God for a lie, and worshiping and serving created things rather than the Creator.” Because they can never do that if they acknowledge God as the Creator and accept the order and nature of the creation that the Lord made man and woman. Therefore, homosexuality is subject to God’s severe judgment, since they love the lust more than they love God.
